The Ryde East P&C have run an extensive and successful music program through the school for many years and we are fortunate to be able to introduce students to percussion from Year 2.
Our percussion teacher Mr. Joe Gould has vast experience in tutoring school children with an emphasis on fun and creative expression, while developing basic music skills. The students develop timing, counting, group cooperation and ensemble skills as well as learning hand techniques. Students are exposed to a number of percussion instruments including drums, xylophone and timpani. Learning percussion in Year 2 is a perfect introduction to music and beneficial for students wishing to progress to learning another instrument and joining the band program in Year 3.
Percussion lessons will start in Term 1, 2017. The lessons are weekly, are in small groups (4-5 students), and run for 30 minutes duration. Lessons are currently run Tuesdays and Thursdays from 1pm to 6.00pm. This means lessons are conducted during class time, lunchtime and after school. After school lessons work particularly well for students who attend OOSH on those days. Lessons are conducted on school property and the class teachers and tutor assist in making sure students get to their timetabled lesson.
Many students continue with percussion in subsequent years and our program also offers shared and private lessons for students in Years 3 to 6, as well as a limited number of group lessons. These older students go on to be the drummers and percussionists for our school’s School and Concert Band. Students have several performance opportunities each year, primarily at our Music Day (held in April/May), and the end of year Musical Variety Night.
